May 21-22, 2010 - 120-Year Hike

Boy Scouts from Sussex Troop-95; hiked 120 years back in time from their campsite to the location of a long abandon Sussex, Lisbon limekiln.   The kiln was abandoned long before the inter-net, man on the moon, mass produced automobiles, and even before the age of telephone and radio. Built in 1888 by Wis. Lime Stone Co., and left to the elements since 1891 this site once included the kiln, dynamite shed, as well as a few miscellaneous wooden out buildings. As a community service project for the Village of Sussex and the Sussex Lisbon Area Historical Society (Slash), the troop cleaned up of the area around the kiln, by removing garbage including broken glass & beer cans. Under the direction of the Sussex Lisbon Historic Society, the scouts worked diligently peeling back a hundred years of overgrowth and neglect. Leaving at the sight a lined walkway/path and a historical marker/plaque (donated by Quad Graphics). Scout Andy Hilins age 16 of Sussex, planned and organized this preservation activity as a service project to fulfill one of the requirements needed to gain BSA’s highest achievement of Eagle Scout.
